Lonely Planet, the world’s leading travel authority, has unveiled its annual collection of the best travel destinations, trends, journeys and experiences to have in the year ahead. The much anticipated list of the top 10 countries, cities, regions and best value destinations includes Manitoba in the eighth spot on the list of best regions.

“Certainly Manitobans know about the hidden gems found in our province, but now the rest of the world can discover them too, thanks to this influential designation.”
Each year, Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel lists start with nominations from Lonely Planet’s vast community of editors, researchers, locals and influencers, and are ultimately decided on and ranked by a panel of judges. The outcome is an eclectic list of destinations with unique, compelling and topical reasons to visit in the year ahead.
“Manitoba is arguably Canada’s most underrated province,” said Ben Buckner, Lonely Planet Canadian Destination Editor. “Not only does it have the highest concentration of polar bears in the world, it’s one of the best places to watch the Northern Lights.”
The best-selling Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2019 is now in its 14th edition and the landing page, lonelyplanet.com/best-in-travel features tips and videos on visiting each destination. Manitoba was nominated by Brandon Presser, who has spent time in over 115 countries and has written over 50 books about travel.

It’s the geographical middle of Canada and a crucial point of encounter; the ancient Aboriginal people would trade their wares at what is now Winnipeg’s downtown core. The number one region is the Piedmont area of Italy, the USA’s Catskills in New York came in second, followed by Northern Peru.
