Sydney’s renowned retail hub, Market City, is set to unveil a stunning transformation of its food offering with the launch of its 1909 Dining Precinct, featuring a stellar line-up of eight deluxe Asian eateries.Located on the third floor of the Haymarket icon, 1909 Dining Precinct will open progressively from today, with Mr Meng Chongqing Gourmet the first restaurant to go live. Marking the second Australian outpost of this hugely popular Chinese noodle empire by famed If You Are The One host, Meng Fei, it will deliver a relaxed dining experience, serving up a variety of famous dishes including chongqing spicy noodles with peas and pork mince and its signature deep fried spring rolls.

Seven other exciting international and local dining concepts, which range from premium dine-in to more casual fare, will open in the coming months, with the precinct expected to be open in its entirety by mid-year.

Featured restaurants will include Dolar Shop, a Macanese hot pot restaurant chain making its Australian debut with a 200-seat restaurant, fabled restaurant YAYOI Japanese Teishoku serving up signature dishes including wagyu beef sukiyaki and unagi eel hitsumabushi, new artisanal Korean BBQ restaurant Kogi showcasing a menu of marinated meats with banchan and soju, and Chinese eatery Beijing Impression. Contemporary sushi train restaurant Fugetsu will also open, with two yet-to-be-announced concepts rounding-out the precinct.

Market City Centre Manager, David Yam, said the creation of the new 1909 Dining Precinct marks Market City’s 21st anniversary – a significant moment for the centre.

“Market City has a strong heritage and reputation for providing both locals and international visitors with a great shopping and dining experience – whether it’s through access to leading retail brands, specialist ingredients, authentic Asian cuisine or the famous Paddy’s Markets.

“We are excited to be evolving our offer to deliver an elevated day-to-night food experience, heralding a new era of dining at Market City and something we believe will further underscore our position as one of the city’s most authentic and vibrant Asian food destinations,” he said.

Paying homage to its roots, the precinct’s name reflects the year the heritage red-brick façade was originally erected to house Sydney’s first fruit and vegetable market. Following the transformation, it will boast new contemporary design including a central lounge-style communal space, alongside custom restaurant fit-outs which will bring a unique range of dining experiences to life under one roof.

Dynamic Sydney-based dragon and lion dance team, Jin Wu Koon, will perform an official blessing ritual at 1909 Dining Precinct, Market City to mark the first restaurant opening today. In Chinese culture, Lion Dance performers mimic a lion’s gestures and emotions to bring luck, fortune and prosperity to the places where they perform. The lion also performs the traditional custom of “cai qing” whereby the lion plucks a lettuce containing a red-packet hung above the new retailer.

1909 Dining Precinct’s launch marks the second stage of Market City’s overall transformation following the renovation of its first-floor food court in 2017. It is also home to The Eight, a modern Chinese yum cha restaurant on level three offering a variety of authentic regional delicacies.

Ultra-convenient, Market City will offer diners free undercover parking from 6pm with more than 600 bays available. It is also easily accessible by public transport including bus, light rail and train with Central and Town Hall station in close proximity.

1909 Dining Precinct, Market City will be open seven days a week until late.
