The House of Martell invites Asia’s aficionados of fine cognac to discover its most ground-breaking cognac to date,Martell Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish, a new experience with one of the world’s classic cognacs. This limited-edition, iconic blend is matured for six months, in casks subjected to intense heat, a method known as “chauffe crocodile” that has never been used before at Martell, and offers an unprecedented taste experience.

Set to launch at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on 1 January 2017, this pioneering new cognac, created by the Martell Cellar Master and Master Cooper, is a celebration of the House’s most emblematic cognac, Martell Cordon Bleu; and is an exploration of the fascinating alchemy between the eaux-de-vie and the wood of the casks in which they are matured.

The fine-grained oak casks in which Martell Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish is matured, undergo the rare technique “chauffe crocodile”, which uses a much more intense flame to ‘burn’ the oak. This method builds upon the process where the insides of the casks are lightly ‘toasted’ to release the aromas of the wood. Wood, a living material, interacts with the eaux-de-vie to shape their aromatic character. The impact on the resulting cognac is astonishing. The roasted notes of mocha coffee and toasted almonds, characteristic of Martell Cordon Bleu, are accentuated, while sweet spicy notes – candied orange, cinnamon and honey – are unleashed on the palate with unexpected intensity.

Martell Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish was created with the House of Martell’s core pillars of elegance, complexity and balance in mind,” said Christophe Valtaud, Cellar Master of Martell Cognac. “It celebrates the daring spirit of Martell Cordon Bleu, the most emblematic of all Martell cognacs, created in 1912 by Edouard Martell, the great-grandson and the tenth descendent of the House’s founder. This carefully crafted cognac which is also the embodiment of our House’s spirit of curiosity, is set to again redefine the conventions of cognac and offers connoisseurs in Asia yet another truly unique taste experience,” Christophe noted.

To complement this unique cognac, Martell Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish is presented in a deep blue box artfully embossed to replicate the crocodile leather-like pattern (charred wood effect) on the oak casks that results from the “chauffe crocodile” toasting method. More striking still, invisible thermochromic inks, which react to heat, turn fiery red when the box is rubbed, creating the illusion of glowing embers.

To celebrate the launch of Martell Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish, the House of Martell has collaborated with leading mixologist Clotilde Lataille, one of London’s hottest bartenders, to create an intricate tasting ritual inspired by wood and heat, as well as a signature ‘Intense Heat’ cocktail. The cocktail is the essence of this innovative aging process that unveils the impact of wood and heat on one of the world’s classic cognacs.

Available just in time for Chinese New Year, Martell Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish will be the ideal gift to celebrate new beginnings with family and friends. This cognac also perfectly complements spicy dishes, seafood and fowl, such as duck, extenuating these foods’ rich, hearty flavours; and will offer aficionados of fine cognac yet another unique experience.

Martell Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish will be available at key travel retail outlets in HKIA, Hong Kong borders, Singapore, Taiwan, Shanghai, Beijing, Thailand and Malaysia. RRP of USD229 or local equivalent.
