Maryborough takes on international heavyweights in World pub record battle

A new international contender has emerged to challenge the small Queensland city of Maryborough as it works to reclaim its title as the Guinness World Record holder for the most people on a pub crawl.

Until a week or so ago, Kansas City was the one to beat after last year claiming the record originally set by Maryborough in 2005.

Pub FestBut now the US city of Philadelphia has entered the battle of the bars by hosting an eight hour, city-wide attempt on Saturday 3 May to take the record of 4,800 set by Kansas City last year.  Organisers are now waiting on final confirmation of the official numbers.

Chairman of the Maryborough’s World’s Greatest Pub Fest Committee Gary Gilbert said Maryborough was used to David versus Goliath battles when it came to protecting its World Record title.

“We’ve already knocked over challenges from London, New York City and a combined effort by four major Canadian cities over the 10 year history of our Pub Fest, so there is no reason to think that we can’t reclaim the title once again from our US friends,” he said.

Maryborough’s sixth assault on the world mark is being spearheaded by a group of Maryborough publicans as part of celebrations for the World’s Greatest Pub Fest on Sunday, June 8.

The Pub Fest is a colourful, moving festival around Maryborough heritage hotels, with thousands of revellers dressing up in outrageous costumes and enjoying a quirky afternoon of music, food and festivities.

“Year after year, our relatively tiny population of 26,000 has managed to lift the bar, helped by an influx of people from all over Australia and beyond eager to take part in this unique event,” Mr Gilbert said.

“We once again have Aussie pride on the line and another chance to shine the international spotlight on Maryborough. We are not sure of the exact number we have to beat to reclaim our title but it will need to be around 5000 official crawlers.

“We are putting the call out for as many as possible to come to Maryborough to join in the fun of the Pub Fest and help raise money for charity, with Alzheimers Australia (QLD) receiving a donation from every Pub Crawl Passport sold.”

For the record to count, participants must purchase a Pub Fest Passport, and have it stamped when they buy a drink (water and non-alcoholic drinks included) in at least 10 of 12 participating venues around Maryborough.

Participants will also require a passport to use the free buses which will run between the venues.

Wacky and colourful costumes are encouraged, with up to $3000 in prize money on offer.

The theme of this year’s World’s Greatest Pub Fest’s costume competition is “magic and fantasy” and the colour is purple.

Pub Fest Passports are now available on-line at or can be purchased on the day from each Pub Fest venue.
