Today, Mastercard together with Samsung announced the start of Samsung Pay in Hong Kong, with the Early Access Program. The mobile payment service will bring Mastercard cardholders in the city a new way to pay safely, smartly and conveniently with their Samsung mobile devices.

Samsung Pay is a simple and secure mobile payments solution that works almost anywhere you can swipe or tap a card, allowing consumers to pay with their credit cards using Samsung mobile devices. Mastercard is working with major card issuers, including Bank of China (Hong Kong), Citibank, Dah Sing Bank, DBS Bank, and Standard Chartered Bank to enable their customers to use their Mastercard credit cards with Samsung Pay.  Starting today, Citibank, Dah Sing Bank and Standard Chartered Bank cardholders can register online to participate in the Early Access Program.

Mastercard recognizes the importance of developing new and innovative payment solutions that can meet the fast-evolving needs of consumers, merchants and issuers in Hong Kong. The introduction of this service enhances the city’s dynamic payment ecosystem by giving consumers the flexibility to link their devices to the payment methods of their choice. Convenient payment without the need to handle cash can significantly reduce transaction times, which benefits consumers and merchants alike. A simplified checkout procedure helps merchants to drive sales, enhance the consumer experience and improve operational efficiency.

With the roll-out of Samsung Pay, Hong Kong adds to the growing list of markets where Mastercard has collaborated with Samsung to bring Samsung Pay to cardholders. To date, cardholders in Australia, Brazil, India, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and the United States can enjoy safe, secure and seamless transactions with their Samsung mobile devices.

To make payments using their Mastercard card, consumers need to choose their preferred Mastercard card when accessing Samsung Pay, scan a fingerprint or iris[1] (which can be different from the authentication registered to unlock the device), and tap their device on a contactless terminal to complete a purchase. The Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES) enables Mastercard credit cardholders to use Samsung Pay. The platform helps transform Samsung mobile devices into commercial devices for making contactless transactions, providing a secure payment experience for users. Every purchase made with a Mastercard using Samsung Pay offers all the benefits and guarantees of a transaction with the physical Mastercard card, which benefits consumers and retailers alike.

“As a global leader in information technology, Samsung has always aspired to create better and more fulfilling experiences for our users through meaningful innovations,” said Yiyin Zhao, the Vice President and Head of Information Technology and Mobile Communication Business for Samsung Electronics H.K. Co. Ltd. “We hope to offer our consumers a payment service that is truly safe, simple, and widely-accepted. We are also thankful for the support of Mastercard. Together, we are creating a more complete payment experience, further enhanced with promotions, to bring mobile payments capability to more users than ever before.”

Hiang Choong, division president of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, Mastercard, said, “We are excited to be part of this collaboration, introducing yet another channel for consumers to pay simply, smartly and safely, and accelerating the city’s adoption of in-store contactless payment, which benefits consumers and merchants alike. According to a recent survey[2] by Mastercard, mobile shopping continues to rise in popularity among consumers in Hong Kong, with more than four in 10 having made purchases via their mobile device in the three months preceding the survey. This partnership demonstrates Mastercard’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions for the rapidly evolving mobile payments space.”

Consumers can make contactless payments using Samsung Pay via compatible Samsung mobile devices. Samsung Pay will be progressively available on  Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5. More compatible Samsung devices will be coming soon.
