MEATSTOCK MELBOURNE: The First Cut Is The Deepest

April 26, 2017 Whats On No Comments Email Email

Crowds flocked to Melbourne’s first Meatstock festival over this weekend, with herds of carnivores treated to more than just a protein fix. BBQ smoke couldn’t block out the bright sunshine on either day, as barbecuers, butchers, bands, and barbers converged at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

“The festival was pumping,” beamed festival organisers Simon Luke and Jay Beaumont, who said feedback was constant and positive all weekend. “Our aim was to cater to all walks of life, offering them variety and something unique in Melbourne’s food and music festival scene.”

“We are also a conscientious festival, with not a scrap of meat going to waste this weekend. All excess food will be donated to Australia’s leading food-rescue charity, OZHarvest.”

44 BBQ teams slogged it out over the weekend for the chance to bathe in the glory of top honour with Sydney based team ‘Bad Ass BBQ’ being the worthy winners. A highlight of the weekend’s festivities was the appearance of revered BBQ Pitmaster Tuffy Stone, who absolutely loved his time doing demos for and chewing the fat with the locals.

Then there were the heated showdowns. The Butcher Wars event, was won by Paul Suleyman from Goodwood Quality Meats in South Australia and the same arena played host to cuts of a different kind, as barbers from across the country battled it out in a display of hair heroics. Richmond resident Shaun from Beef’s Barbers, was crowned the winner of the state’s first-ever Barber Wars.

A beefy lineup of bands provided the musical backdrop to the festival, with headliners The Delta Riggs playing to a crowd hyped-up on brisket and barbecue on the Saturday, while Sunday’s attendees copped marinades at the booths and serenades care of Skyscraper Stan, Bullhorn, and Royal Chant.

Meatstock now sets its sights on Sydney on the 6th and 7th May. For more on Meatstock, please visit: http://www.meatstock.com.au
