Meet our New Good Luck Charm: Namchok – Angsana Laguna Phuket

November 14, 2013 Hotel News No Comments Email Email

The flagship property of Angsana Hotels & Resorts, Angsana Laguna Phuket is fortunate to welcome a new and lovable member to its team. Baby elephant Namchok is already adjusting well to his new role as the star of the resort and brightening up the lives of every guest and associate at Angsana Laguna Phuket.

Two and a half year old Namchok is the successor of beloved Chokdee, who is retiring from his role as resident elephant at the resort. Through sheer coincidence, both Namchok and Chokdee means lucky in Thai, and the new baby elephant is off to an auspicious start with his new role.

Even though elephants have an iconic status in Thailand, their fates are not always as positive as those of Namchok or Chockdee. Many of them are forced to walk the streets of Bangkok to perform circus acts for tourists. Fortunately, Namchok was luckily spared this ill-fated destiny. Son to an elephant in the Ta Klang Elephant Village in the Surin province, he was born in a safe home. Unfortunately, the owner of Namchok’s mother did not have the funds to take care of a second elephant and his future was uncertain.

In a lucky twist of fate, the team at Angsana Laguna Phuket was looking for a successor for Chokdee. They were bowled over by Namchok and his outgoing personality who would make him an ideal candidate for the role. He is warmly welcomed by Chokdee, who is leaving the resort behind to enjoy a well deserved retirement, while Namchok is set to become a new symbol of Angsana’s commitment to driving sustainable development on the island.

Namchok will take residence in the spacious elephant pavilion within the Laguna Phuket integrated resort, where he is free to roam, play, and snack on two favourite dishes: tasty bananas and fresh pineapple-leafs.  This comfortable camp has been inspected and approved by Dr. Richard Lair, chief adviser to the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre in Lampang, and is part of Laguna’s Elephant Education programme, which promotes understanding of elephants’ well being.

“Though Chokdee’s kind and lovable character will be deeply missed by Angsana Laguna Phuket associates and guests alike, we are happy to know that his departure from the resort means that he can now enjoy a well-earned rest while continuing to be cared for by his handlers within Phuket” said Jerry John, General Manager of Angsana Laguna Phuket. “We are certain that Namchok will become just as great of an asset, and we look forward to his playful nature and company lightening up our resort every day”.

Walking In The Footsteps Of Lucky

image002We are pleased to introduce you to our new associate: Namchok. This two and half year old baby elephant will be the successor of beloved Chokdee, who is retiring from his role as star of the Angsana Laguna Phuket. With both Namchok and Chokdee meaning ‘lucky’ in Thai, Namchok is sure to fit his new role perfectly.

Offspring to an elephant in the Ban Ta Klang Elephant Camp in Surin, Namchok was born in a safe home. However, when the owner of Namchok’s mother did not have the funds to take care of a second elephant, his future was uncertain. In a lucky twist of fate, Chokdee’s hunt for a successor resulted in the move of Namchok to scenic Bang Tao Bay

Namchok will now take residence in the spacious elephant pavilion within the Laguna Phuket integrated resort, where the friendly baby elephant is free to roam, play, and snack on its two favorite dishes: tasty bananas and fresh pineapple-leafs.

Namchok’s healthy diet of a daily 25 kilos of bananas and pineapple-leafs results in the young elephant weighing in at an impressive 350 kilos. This weight does not slow him down one bit on the sunset strolls and swims he enjoys taking with his Mahout Chucheap. This lifelong caretaker says that he cherishes the special bond he has with Namchok’s fun-loving, gentle spirit.

Namchok will visit the resort twice a day, where he will enjoy a mid-morning snack at Marketplace at 8.30, and will partake in a leisurely walk past the emerald waters of the Andaman Sea when he visits the beach at 15.00. He loves children as well as starring in pictures, and would love to be a part of your wedding or event at Angsana Laguna Phuket.
