Melbourne’s Iconic Queen Victoria Market Captures the Authentic Spirit of India With Its First Indian Festival

June 28, 2017 Whats On No Comments Email Email

Melbournians love their historic Queen Victoria Market, that mecca of hustle, bustle, foodie delights and energetic sounds in the heart of the city.  Come the 15th July, the Queen Street Plaza will be unrecognizable, as it turns into a mini-version of Old Delhi’s pulsating Chandi Chowk, with its food, flavours, artisanal crafts and entertainment.

The two-day festival, from 15-16 July, 2017, is produced by international India travel experts, Beacon Holidays. Festival Director and Director of Beacon Holidays, Himanshi Munshaw Luhar, hit on the idea as a way of showcasing India and its compelling culture, beyond the cliché. “We know people associate India with hot food and Bollywood dancing but there is simply so much more and our job will be to share our culture with Victorians at a deeper, more authentic level”

The festival will transport Melbournians to authentic India, sharing the family secrets of home cooks and the authentic recipes of traditional food vendors, together with uniquely fusion-style street food such as Masala tacos. Workshops will bring to light little-known tidbits about spices, their origins, uses and health benefits.

Masterchef contestant and admitted food fanatic, Neha Sen, who slayed the judging panel with her ice-cream and chutney recipes, will be sharing age-old recipes passed on to her by her mother and grand-mother “I’m just so excited to be part of an event where I get to dip into my background and culture. It’s a great platform to interact with people and share our stories ” says the festival ambassador and owner of NEHA’S, her Indian inspired food range.

Indian Classical Dancers [as well as Bollywood] and highly talented musicians will guarantee to excite with heart-pounding, exquisitely difficult dances that talk of cosmic wonders, joy and the gods.

After the over excitement of the Bollywood workshops, it’ll be time for some calmer moments, taking in the regional cooking demonstrations, the Henna hand art and joining in the free yoga sessions. A detour past the merchandise vendors before leaving, to select a couple of gifts or some jewelry, should just about complete a sensational visit.

Win a luxury trip:

An appetite for authentic India will be well and truly whetted by the Indian Festival, so Beacon Holidays is providing an opportunity to win a 7-day luxury holiday to India for two people, inclusive of 6 nights accommodation and touring in the southern state of Kerala. Flights ex Asia are being provided by Jet Airways.
