Melia Hotels International is about to celebrate its 60th anniversary after consolidating its leadership position as the largest hotel company in Spain, third largest in Europe, and 17th largest hotel chain in the world, with a portfolio of nearly 100,000 rooms on four continents.
A strategic focus on international growth based largely on management contracts has allowed the company to achieve high rates of growth, adding around one hundred hotels over the last three years, and strengthen its position as a hotel management company of reference for hotel investors and owners worldwide.
Led by Gabriel Escarrer, the company increased its portfolio in 2014 by almost 5,000 rooms and has become one of the most international companies in Spain. According to the latest ranking published by US Hotels Magazine, Meliá Hotels International is now the 17th largest hotel company in the world by number of rooms at the close of 2014, competing with the major American and Chinese hotel chains.
The growth of the Spanish hotel company has been particularly significant in regions such as Asia, which since 2012 has grown from 6 to 26 hotels open or in the process of opening. The region remains a major focus for company growth. The portfolio has grown selectively, with a view to boosting the presence of upscale and premium brands such as Innside by Meliá, Meliá Hotels & Resorts, and the luxury lifestyle ME by Meliá brand, while also maintaining a healthy balance between city and resort hotels.
