MGA Welcomes a Solution to Our Energy Crisis

Over the past months we have witnessed arguments, suggestions and deafening opinions being raged from all sides of politics on the need for a solution to the energy crisis here in Australia. Jos de Bruin, CEO of Master Grocers Australia said that, “It’s time we put aside our parochial and biased opinions and get moving on not just offering a solution but implementing it.

“The Turnbull Government has finally proposed a plan that promises businesses ‘cheaper and more reliable electricity.’ The proposal would allow energy retailers to purchase power from various sources to enable a guarantee of supply during peak periods. At the same time they will be able to buy clean energy to assist them to meet our commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement.”

Mr. de Bruin commented that “Our industry has been facing a dismal future. Many small retailers have been looking down the barrel of closing their businesses. They simply cannot continue facing out of control energy bills and survive into the future. Where would that leave the thousands of employees who work in the retail industry? Our members need to operate fridges, lighting, air conditioning and machines, so their reliance on energy is extremely high but if costs continue to sky rocket they will no alternative but to close their doors.”

“We have been offered a solution in the Federal Government’s energy plan. It may not be ideal and there may be alternatives. But at this point in time it is the only feasible solution we have been offered. We urge the State Governments and others that are bickering over the finer details of the plan to desist from arguing from an ideological perspective and to accept this is a plan that we can utilise to move forward. We may never find the “perfect plan” but the Government’s current proposal is a positive step forward so let’s hope it doesn’t get tripped at the last hurdle.”
