Millennials are major supporters of adding a new verse to the Australian National Anthem to recognise Indigenous Australians, YouGov-Fifty Acres poll reveals

Aussie millennials are major supporters of adding a third verse to the Australian National Anthem to recognise Indigenous Australians, according to the latest poll released by leading international research firm YouGov and Australian communications and engagement agency Fifty Acres.


  • More than half of 18-34 year olds surveyed said they supported including the new verse, recognising Indigenous Australians as “First Peoples of this land”.
  • Overall, 45% of Australians supported the verse, while 30% were against it.
Millennials also support increasing Australia’s refugee settlement program to 10,000, as recently proposed by a cross-party group of Federal MPs.
  • More than half of 18-34 year olds said yes to the change – far above the overall population.
  • Interestingly, most Australians are against the increase, at 53%
Finally, millennials are also major supporters of same sex marriage.
  • More than 3 in 5 support legislation allowing same sex marriage.
  • Most Australians also support same sex marriage, at 52%

YouGov-Fifty Acres Partnership

YouGov is partnering with Fifty Acres to produce a regular fortnightly opinion report on topical government questions and announcements from the view of voting intention on issues ranging from the economy, health, education, environment through to immigration.

Methodology OverviewThe poll is a fortnightly online survey conducted amongst 1,000 Australians aged 18+. The poll sample is nationally representative with quotas based on age, gender and region. YouGov + Fifty Acres were in the field from Thursday 25 May – Monday 29 May.
