Millennium Plaza Dubai, a luxury accommodation along Sheikh Zayed Road, and Brest Friends, the first breast cancer support group in Dubai and part of Al Jalila Foundation, teamed up for “Pinktober”, an event organised to celebrate “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”.

Held at Millennium Plaza Dubai last October 22, Pinktober was attended by breast cancer survivors and patients including friends and family members who gathered for a common cause – increase public awareness of breast cancer.

Nemo Acimovic, General Manager of Millennium Plaza Dubai, said: “We have joined hands with Brest Friends to support those who were affected by breast cancer and those involved in the treatment and prevention of the disease. Breast cancer is one of the primary causes of death in women so there is a great need to educate and inform them that the disease can be prevented and cured. By sponsoring Pinktober and partnering with Brest Friends, we hope to encourage other hotels to support important health campaigns in the UAE not only during the month of October but throughout the year.”

Dr Houriya Kazim, President and Founder of Brest Friends, commented: “From the moment a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer her life changes forever; it can be an overwhelming experience and patients need a strong support network to lean on throughout their journey. For over 12 years Brest Friends has been able to provide moral and emotional support to patients and survivors through our monthly meetings and regular activities.”

Dr Houriya added: “We are immensely grateful to Millennium Plaza Hotel for hosting our October members’ meeting.”

Although the number of women diagnosed in the UAE with breast cancer is not yet known, reports show that it is on the rise. Women especially those over the age of 30 years are encouraged to undergo screening and have regular health check-ups because the earlier breast cancer is detected, the better survival probabilities for women and continue to enjoy their lives.

Members and guests of Brest Friends savoured the sumptuous food, desserts, hot and cold beverages prepared by the talented Chefs of Millennium Plaza Dubai. The event was held at the spacious club lounge located on the 61st floor where they enjoyed the amazing views of the city.

It was an evening of fun, socializing and entertainment. The venue was decorated with pink ribbons and balloons to mark the occasion.

Brest Friends was established in 2005 by Dr Houriya Kazim, the UAE’s first female surgeon, with the mission to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer. Brest Friends run the first support group where survivors meet once a month to learn, socialize and support each other and help dispel the common misconception about the disease and remove barriers such as limited or no health insurance, lack of transportation and childcare or language and cultural differences. In 2015, Brest Friends partnered with Al Jalila Foundation to promote early detection, facilitate medical treatment and set up and fund locally-based research into the epidemiology of breast cancer in the UAE.
