‘Millionairess’ walks free after allegedly lunging

December 7, 2016 Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59An allegedly very wealthy woman has escaped conviction for lunging at a flight attendant and pushing her during an international flight.

A magistrate in Barbados ruled that the incident appeared to have taken place in international airspace on a transatlantic flight to the Caribbean island. Therefore local law did not apply.

The Scottish Sun described the defendant, Diane Breen, 52, as a “millionairess” and former flight attendant, who lives in northern England. The paper said Breen, who was quaffing Champagne at the plane’s bar, was accused of “interfering” with a member of cabin crew.

Breen, whose partner is a telecom tycoon, according to the paper, was said to be travelling in a “GBP 5000 seat” (about AUD 8500) where she was alleged to be disturbing other passengers on the Virgin Atlantic flight.

Breen was arrested as the plane landed at the Caribbean island’s Grantley Adams International airport.

The Scottish Sun said she arrived at court in Saint Joseph in a black mini dress, pearl earrings and necklace, a large silver crucifix and carrying a beige designer bag.

Magistrate Elwood Watts said he did not feel the court was in a position to rule on the case, because while the country’s Civil Aviation Act said a person could not interfere with a crewmember – “this is in our own airspace”.

The incident had happened three hours into a flight from England.

The magistrate told Breen to “go in peace, behave on the plane though. This attendant clearly felt your behaviour warranted intervention, don’t find yourself here again.”

The airline said it had investigated and “the customers may be banned from future travel”, the paper reported.
