More Aussies ditch car and fly on domestic holidays

egtmedia59Flying, rather than driving or fly-drive, is the preferred domestic holiday transport mode for more Australians than ever, latest figures show.
The advance of low-cost carriers like Jetstar and Tigerair seems to be having an effect. Although most Australians still drive to local holiday destinations, more are choosing to forget driving altogether and just fly: 13% of domestic travellers in the year to February 2014 did that, up from 7% in 2002, the latest Roy Morgan Holiday Tracking Survey shows. Another 18% flew and drove, to make a total 31% of domestic travellers catching a plane on their domestic trip – up from 18% 12 years ago.

More than half (56%) of Australians use only a car to reach their domestic holiday destination, down from 65% in February 2002.

Commenting on the findings, Roy Morgan Research’s international director of tourism, travel and leisure, Jane Ianniello, said that an increasing number of Australians were taking advantage of cheaper airfares and flying to their domestic holiday destinations.

“Many of those who fly to a domestic holiday destination hire a car or 4WD to get around and see the sights.”

Roy Morgan Research further divides its survey audience into various demographic, aspirational and socio-economic groups with the company’s new profiling tool, Helix Personas.

Ianniello says this tool shows that the ‘Young and Platinum’ group (well educated inner city professionals and typically renters) are more likely than other groups to fly to their domestic holiday destination (71% versus 31% of total holiday travellers aged over 14). Young and Platinum are “ambitious and very well paid, they work hard and clearly want to maximise the time spent at destinations after a quick flight”.
