Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “Global developments in the aviation industry can also be seen at our airports. In view of the declining economic prospects and high cost pressure, airlines have critically reviewed and streamlined what they offer. Instead of further passenger growth, we expect consolidation in the coming months. However, we expect an increase of around one million passengers in Berlin-Brandenburg in the whole of 2019.”

With regard to the entire period from January to October 2019, the number of passengers has risen compared to the same period last year. A total of 30,493,483 million passengers were handled in Schönefeld and Tegel in the first ten months of this year (an increase of 4.7 percent). Tegel handled 20,688,639 passengers, 13.6 percent more than in the first ten months of 2018. Schönefeld had 9,804,844 passengers, 10.1% fewer than in the same period last year. The sharp drop at Schönefeld is mainly due to the fact that airlines have relocated routes from Schönefeld to Tegel.

A total of 25,597 aircraft took off and landed at both Berlin airports in October 2019, 10.7 percent fewer than in the same month last year. There were 17,306 take-offs and landings at Tegel (a decrease of 7.8 percent), and 8,291 take-offs and landings at Schönefeld (a decrease of 16.3 percent).
