The old adage ‘location, location, location’ is as true for romance as it is for real estate. If you’re looking for the perfect place to propose EliteSingles surveyed 1600 participants to compile the definitive list of the 15 ultimate romantic places to propose and what you need to know in 2018.

  •          Venice pushes Paris off the top spot to propose in 2018
  •          Home makes it into top 10 places to propose
  •          1 in 5 men would prefer to be proposed to
  •          Men choose quality time over beach time, unlike women
  •          The most romantic place can be a person and not a place

The Top 12 places to propose in 2018

  1. Venice, Italy
  2. Paris, France
  3. Hawaii, USA
  4. The Bahamas
  5. Vanua Levu, Fiji
  6. At home
  7. Bali, Indonesia
  8. New York, USA
  9. Niagara Falls, North America
  10. Sydney, Australia
  11. Edinburgh, Scotland
  12. Las Vegas, USA

Although Paris, the so-called city of love,  does make a strong appearance, it doesn’t take the number one spot, with Venice being voted the ultimate place to propose in 2018. Dreamy beach destinations also make a strong showing, with Hawaii, Fiji, The Bahamas and Bali all making it to the top 10.

In fact, when trying to decide where to plan your proposal, both men and women voted the ocean as the most romantic setting (59%), a foreign city coming in a distant second (17%) and up in the mountains (14%) placed third.  Although, romance might be a little closer to home than you may imagine, with your own homecoming in at 6th place.

Men also want to get swept off their feet

1 in 5 men (21%) said they would actually prefer to be proposed to. In 2018 who said that proposing is only a man’s domain! So forget waiting for a Leap Year, traditionally women’s turn to propose, and get planning now!

And men really do have a soft spot for romance too. Men voted their best romantic getaway activity as quality time with their partner, with 62% voting for relaxing and hanging out. While women chose to spend time on the beach (64%) as their top activity on a romantic getaway.

It’s a personal thing

The survey revealed that romantic places can also be defined by a person, not only a place. Numerous respondents said that a place was romantic because of the person they shared it with. One of our favourite responses being:

“Anywhere that we are together – we’ll always be the perfect place”

Proposal Prep:

Zoe Coetzee, the EliteSingles relationship psychologist, gave these three top tips to prepare for the perfect proposal in 2018:

  1. Plan ahead: choose the location, the order of your events, who you want there (if you’re planning to include friends or family) and plan ahead.      To pull off the perfect proposal, layout out the finer points and add in sentimental details that are meaningful to you two!
  2. Practice: proposing can be stressful, so run through the plan ahead of time; say your speech out loud beforehand, and practice the moment so you don’t leave out important parts. But at the same time, always speak from the heart!
  3. It’s about the two of you: keep your eyes on the prize. Don’t let the stress of planning derail you and focus on the main purpose – to ask the person you love to spend their life with you. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, focus on your partner and the love you share – the rest is just details!
