A heavily pregnant woman passing through an international airport turned out not to be pregnant at all – her ‘baby bump’ consisted of 86 pellets of a substance suspected to be cocaine, weighing about 1.7kg in total.
Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria, arrested a 41-year-old woman for faking pregnancy to conceal drugs.
The suspect, a mother of three, was arrested during screening of incoming passengers on an Emirates Airlines flight from Dubai, African news source SaharaReporters.com said.
NDLEA chairman, Colonel Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (retired,) said the woman’s effort to feign pregnancy had failed to fool vigilant narcotic agents. It was the latest in a series of attempts to smuggled drugs into Nigeria, he said.
“Some of the suspects recently apprehended concealed drugs in their socks and luggage, while others ingested wraps of cocaine.
“In spite of their craftiness, we are daily stopping them from perpetrating their criminal acts and forcing them into a retreat,” Abdallah said.
The suspect was said to have concealed 86 wraps of cocaine inside a waist bag which was then strapped to her stomach.
She was described as an importer of handbags and shoes from Dubai.
