‘Moulin de Gassac’ Unveiled as New Brand Ambassador for Mas de Daumas Gassac Wine Legend at VINEXPO Hong Kong 2018

France’s venerable Mas de Daumas Gassac family winery is unveiling its new generation of more accessible younger siblings under the second estate brand flagship, Moulin de Gassac, at VINEXPO Hong Kong 2018 from 29 – 31 May at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.

The estate founded in the 1970s by Véronique and Aimé Guibert has earned a rare “cult” status as a ‘Grand Crus of the Midi’, placing modestly-designated Languedoc on the fine wine map.  Now their sons Samuel, Gaël, Roman and Basile Guibert are continuing the tradition of fine winemaking with an expanded collection of more accessible, everyday wines crafted on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

Geared for wine shops, restaurants or wine lovers wanting to access the Gassac experience, the Moulin de Gassac selection is now the brand ambassador for Mas de Daumas Gassac worldwide – complete with a new logo and family-oriented image.

The collection of terroir & vintage driven wines available in red, white and rosé is firmly endorsed by the revered Gassac signature – crafted using the same rigor devoted to the great Daumas Gassac vintages, to produce wines combining elegance, finesse and feeling of the terroir with a truly wide appeal.

Importantly, grapes are rigorously sourced from single vineyard selections based on the terroir; and agricultural engineers from Mas de Daumas Gassac oversee viticulture, harvesting, vinification and elevage of the wine, as well as commercialisation and marketing.

Vinification is meticulous with an authentic approach of single-vineyard fermentations in dedicated tanks. Low yields mean fewer than 20,000 bottles of each label are made, with the exception of the iconic ‘Guilhem’ label, with annual sales now over a million bottles.

Ultimately, maturing is carefully overseen so wines exude the character of the magnificent amphitheatre of vines facing the Mediterranean and the port of Sète.

These younger Moulin de Gassac siblings are typified by their lasting fresh fruit aromatics and off-beat blends such as Cabernet-Sauvignon/Syrah and Viognier/Chardonnay.

The 2017 vintages at VINEXPO Hong Kong 2018 are in three categories of the Moulin de Gassac Signature ranges: Guilhem RangeVarietal Rangeand Pont de Gassac Range.

The flagship Guilhem Range features red, white and rosé blends reflecting both an expression of the Languedoc with the Gassac signature: elegance, finesse and balance.

Guilhem White 2017 is a classic white wine and great match with fish with sauces, shellfish and summer; while Guilhem Red 2017 is a perfect everyday wine at an amazing value, a delight with light, elegant meals, mixed salads and grills. Guilhem Rosé 2017 is a classy rosé perfect with grills, barbecues, salad and fruit dessert.

A sister award-winning collection is the more limited-production Pont de Gassac Range, selected from old vines and terroirs with strong personality. Pont de Gassac White 2017, with fruity aromas of oranges, is a great match with white meats, fish with sauces and shellfish; and Pont de Gassac Red 2017 is powerful, elegant which appreciates decanting for two hours and is a delight with red meat, game, duck and spicy dishes.

Finally, a Varietal Range of single-grape wines showcases the rich diversity of the appelation-free Moulin de Gassac brand, along with the skills to craft and vinify different single varietals to bring a unique expression from each.

Among the reds, the award-winning Pinot Noir 2017 is elegant, complex and mouthwatering with abundant fruit, beautiful freshness and soft tannins making it a balanced and fine Pinot. Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is a wine with charm and finesse, ideal with game, country pâté and truffle omelettes. Merlot 2017 is a charming wine, and perfect match with red meat or a cheese platter. The hearty Syrah 2017 pairs ideally with game, country pâté and roasted vegetables – just like its Australian cousin, shiraz.

Among the whites, Viognier 2017 is the standout award-winner, an intense, complex, lemony wine that especially enhances white meat and creamy dishes. Full, buttery Chardonnay 2017 enhances white meat and Mediterranean shellfish. Expressive, exotic, peachy Sauvignon 2017 is ideal with Mediterranean fish and shellfish.

Epitomising Languedoc’s rebirth as a wine region in the 1970s, wine grower Aimé Guibert’s vision is today perpetuated by his four sons in this untamed Languedoc valley – outside the boundaries of strictly-defined appellations, in ‘Vin de Pays’ territory.

Aimé Guibert once said of them: “All four are different, but emotionally they were all immediately captivated by wine growing.” Sadly, Aimé passed away in 2016. But the pioneering spirit of the Aniane wine grower lives on in the Gassac valley, with his sometimes spellbinding genius running in the veins of this close-knit family – embodied in the clear, uncompromising route the Guibert brothers have mapped out for themselves.

Mas de Daumas Gassac is present in more than 100 countries and has been exporting to Asia since gaining international recognition and prominence in the early 1980s.

“Our return to VINEXPO Hong Kong 2018 aims to renew friendships and acquaintances with our many fans and partners in Asia, which is an important market for us that we are keen to develop further, strengthening both our reputation and presence to the same level as in Europe and North America.” said Mr Basile Guibert.
