MD: Learn how to distinguish what kind of blog you actually have: what are the distinctive features of personal and lifestyle blogging and why is it necessary to distinguish them?

Lifestyle vs. Personal Blogging

Blogosphere nowadays can surprise anyone who wants to categorize all blogs people have today with the variety of directions, themes and aims. There are so many of them and it is sometimes extremely hard to distinguish one from another because sometimes bloggers search for their niche and use their blogs as a testing site. Here and there authors themselves cannot figure out what kind of blog they have (and for some it may be a huge surprise to find out that what they name personal blog other people conceive as a motivation blog). There are personal, lifestyle, motivational, educational (, for example, has a great blog with great tips how to write academic papers), etc.

In fact, it is quite easy to mix up concepts of lifestyle and personal blogs because of erroneous perception of lifestyle blog. People think that if they are writing about life or do not want to focus on certain theme and write little about everything then they have a lifestyle blog. And how wrong they are!

For others lifestyle blog is a vivid picture of a life of a fast liver (usually girl in her mid-20s), a person usually without proper work, obsessed with appearance, clothes and cosmetics. And, again, that impression is completely wrong.

One may say, what’s the point of searching for differences between two similar kinds of blogs? However, how on earth you are going to earn money with help of your blog, or use it as a tool of promoting something if you don’t even know exactly, what it is? People always need clear and logical classification of things to be more confident and productive.

Personal blogging deals with author’s personal emotions, feelings, experience, hobbies etc. Despite the fact that that blog can rise many questions, dig deep into different issues, all stories told there are from author’s personal experience. No matter how diverse are the topics in the blog, as long as they are based on personal experience of the author, this blog is personal. Take a look at GG Renee’s blog – perfect example of personal blog, that deals with author’s thoughts, achievements and targets. And there are plenty of other personal blogs, completely different from one another, and still, with one thing in common – all of them are about author’s personality. All these blogs are full of stories told by these digital storytellers.

Lifestyle blogs are different – of course, as the name suggests, they are about life. However, they deal with personal interests rather than with personal experience. You won’t find a story there – such blog looks more like an article in the magazine, polished, pooled, resembling an advertisement. In lifestyle blogs much prominence is given to the visuals – there you will find loads of photos. Usually bloggers write there about different types of tools and interests that they use or have in everyday life.

Sometimes authors do not want to be a little more specific about contents of their blogs hiding behind the notion “Lifestyle”, however, it is not the best solution. The audience of the blog always requires some clarification: they want to know what to expect from certain blog, so it is essential to narrow down content to meet the requirements of the target audience instead of trying to grab interest of as many people as possible.

Put it in the crude form, personal blog deals with stories based on personal experience and lifestyle blog – with personal interests.

Important tip: in case if you use your blog for commercial purposes, like advertising your products, then pay attention to the correctness of writing, make sure that your style of writing is persuasive and catching. For the first little while you can use assistance of professional editors and proofreaders who can polish your texts, making them more precise, flawless and interesting. Afterwards you can use improved papers as a source of inspiration. Readers always pay attention to the correctness of the text as mistakes can kill the whole post.
