mtatravelMTA – Mobile Travel Agents has confirmed its intention to join the AFTA Travel Accreditation Scheme (ATAS) when applications open in May this year.

Announcing the company’s decision co-managing directors Roy and Karen Merricks, both recognised long time advocates of the scheme, said ATAS was “the right way forward”.

“We have listened to and considered everything put forward throughout the entire consultative process and our decision to join has been made on our belief – and our MTA members belief – that the new ATAS scheme will go a long way to ensuring that the travelling consumer has the necessary protections against things such as insolvency,” Mr Merricks said.

“The outgoing system has been broken for years and failed to adequately protect the traveller as it did not cover all of the travel intermediaries.

“With the winding up of the old ways, it’s very important for us all to be internationally competitive and not handcuffed by backward thinking compulsory ATAS compliance requirements proposed by some.

“Inbuilt ATAS safeguards necessary to ensure the professional integrity of the scheme will stand all members and consumers in good stead.

“We understand all insurance options are or will be available and each business will avail themselves of those products best suited to their individual businesses.

“MTA has always ensured that the customers money is well protected and with ATAS it can provide even more comfort as the scheme includes all of its suppliers as well.

“Key to everything is the new scheme’s flexibility and that flexibility caters for all of the business variations that exist today in our industry.

“In a nutshell, the ATAS proposal is the most comprehensive approach to providing comfort to the traveller and the time has come for the industry, collectively, to embrace the scheme.”
