MTA – “Responsible Agents will get it right”

Responding to comments made by Travel Counsellors chairman, David Speakman regarding the implementation of the new ATAS scheme, MTA – Mobile Travel Agents managing director, Roy Merricks said his counterpart had raised several ‘red flags’ – and in particular the contentious issue of on-charging of insurance costs to clients.

But Mr Merricks said he was confident “responsible agents would get it right” and safeguard their clients in the post-TCF era.

“Regardless of the winding up of the TCF, it has always been incumbent on responsible agents to ensure client’s monies are safeguarded as far as possible,“ Mr Merricks said.

“During recent AFTA forum meetings, the fact that on-charging of insurance costs is a practice engaged by some agents overseas was verbalised by ATAS general manager, Gary O’Riordan.

“And similar moves by agents here may be something for their individual consideration post-TCF.

“But in my observation at the time, the mood in the room certainly wasn’t approving.

“It may well be a different scenario in other parts of the world where Mr Speakman’s organisation is active.

“But I am confident here in Australia, intermediary and end supplier insurance will be taken up by responsible agents moving forward into the post-TCF environment.

“All I can say is bring on the ATAS scheme and insurance options to protect us all – these are years overdue.”

Mr Merricks said he was delighted AFTA had confirmed it will host a series of Transition Workshops from next month ahead of the formal launch of the ATAS scheme in July 2014.

“The workshops are timely – more to the point they will play a key role in defusing and demystifying any and all concerns that agents may have regarding doing business in the post-TCF era,” he said.
