a centre for the arts, a sporting city, a favourite with beer drinkers – at ITB Berlin the Bavarian state capital presents some of its highlights for 2016.
Among all the cities popular with tourists Munich is one of the most sought-after destinations. This year Bavaria’s leading city can offer a whole range of attractive events and exhibitions Several activities commemorate the introduction of the Bavarian Purity Law, including the celebrations taking place downtown from 22 to 24 July. A number of exhibitions are also devoted to this subject. They include “BIER.MACHT.MÜNCHEN” – Beer makes Munich – (8 April 2016 – 8 January 2017) and “Bier ist der Wein dieses Landes” – Beer is this State’s Wine” at the Jüdisches Museum (13 April 2016 – 8 January 2017). Another significant anniversary is that of BMW. Marking one hundred years since the establishment of Bayerische Motorenwerke, a gala party is being given from 9 to 11 September under the slogan “The next 100 years” at the Olympic Park, BMW World and the BMW Museum.
Sport is the theme at the Munich Olympic Park, where events will include the Water Sports Festival (13 March), the cycling festival “Sattelfest” (22 – 24 April), the Bavarian Beach Volleyball Cup 2016 (30 May – 3 June and 6 – 9 June) and the Action Sport Show Munich Mash (1 – 3 July).
From March onwards a series of outstanding exhibitions are taking place. The paintings of Joaquín Sorollas (4 March – 3 July) will fill the Kunsthalle with southern light. The Pinakothek der Moderne will be staging an exhibition by the designer Konstantin Gricic until 18 September.
