Murder upshot: tourists may need to wear wristbands

egtmedia59Identification wristbands will be distributed to tourists following safety concerns after the grisly murders and suspected rape of two young British backpackers in an idyllic Thai holiday island last month.

The two tourists were found on a beach after a late night party, hacked to death with a garden hoe. An initial report on the case was carried here: Hunt for murderer of tourists grips Thai full-moon island

Thailand’s tourism minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul told media yesterday she had already approached hotels with the wristband idea. The wristbands would help identify tourists who get lost or into trouble, she said.

“When tourists check in to a hotel they will be given a wristband with a serial number that matches their ID and shows the contact details of the resort they are staying in, so that if they’re out partying late and, for example, get drunk or lost, they can be easily assisted,” Australia’s ABC News quoted Kobkarn as saying.

“The next step would be some sort of electronic tracking device but this has not yet been discussed in detail.”

The only problem, as Kobkarn conceded, is that tourists may not want to wear the wristbands.

The bodies of Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, were found on a beach on the southern island of Koh Tao on 15 September 2014.

While post-mortem examinations by Thailand’s forensics department have revealed the cause of death (Witheridge died from severe head wounds and Miller died from drowning and blows to the head) police seem no closer to finding the murderer. Initial leads have turned out to be red herrings and no charges have been laid.
