Two of NSW’s most revered institutions will combine forces to keep the State’s cultural output thriving during a busy construction period. 
The Powerhouse Museum will present the Australian Museum’s annual exhibition: Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year in August – as the nation’s first museum begins its $57.5m Project Discover transformation.
Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said it’s a great outcome for museum goers.
“I am delighted that two of our much-loved museums are working together to display this exhibition as the Australian Museum embarks on a major upgrade in August, which will include a magnificent new touring hall and education spaces,” Mr Harwin said.
“In February 2021 the Australian Museum will open the global blockbuster exhibition Tutankhamun: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh – what an incredible day that will be for fans of King Tut.
To enable the major building works to get underway, the Australian Museum will temporarily close to the public from 19 August 2019 for approximately 12 months.
Director and CEO of the Australian Museum, Kim McKay AO said the museum will still be working hard during the closure period.
“While our public spaces will temporarily close our work will continue to reach well beyond our physical walls,” said Ms McKay.
“Many of our community and school outreach programs will continue, as will the important research work of the Australian Museum Research Institute, a global leader in scientific discovery and conservation.”
Lisa Havilah, Chief Executive, Powerhouse Museum said “We are excited to be partnering with the Australian Museum to present their annual photographic exhibition opening on the 16 August 2019. I am also thrilled to announce that admission to the exhibition will be free with general admission,” said Ms Havilah
To ensure residents, school children and visitors to NSW have access to a major museum during the construction period of the Australian Museum, the Powerhouse Museum at Ultimo will remain open until its staged closure begins from 1 July 2020.
During this period the Powerhouse will continue to present a vibrant and diverse cultural program that will engage communities with arts, science and creativity. The development of the Powerhouse Precinct in Parramatta is on track for delivery in 2023.
