The repertoire for the evening includes magnificent music from famed classical composers Strauss, Stravinsky and Dvořák together with tango-inspired pieces from Piazzolla (during which Queensland Symphony Orchestra Principal Oboe Huw Jones will solo), Moncayo and Marquez.

Concertgoers are urged to bring a picnic or select from the on-site food and beverage vendors and arrive early (from 5.30pm) for pre-show entertainment including the Meraki Circus Performers, the Paganini String Quartet, Life Art Drawing, Veils of Arabia, Irish Dancing and more. The evening concert is part of a range of activities for Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Gladstone, which begins on Thursday 26 July with a brass workshop for students and teachers from the region, and a choral workshop for Gladstone primary school students. An education show entitled The Flying Orchestra will be performed on Friday morning at 11am at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre. This is a concert for upper primary and lower secondary level students/school groups, featuring an original score by Joe Twist and set to a beautiful story by Queenslander Clare McFadden.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra Chair Mr Chris Freeman said taking music to the people across the state was a highlight for the company. “Queensland Symphony Orchestra is one of the state’s largest performing arts organisations and what’s extraordinary is that the company creates and delivers unique musical experiences across Queensland. Highly trained professional musicians – at home in any great concert hall on the planet – travel to all corners of the state to connect with Queenslanders, to ensure all that can experience the true power of live music.”

“Music brings people together, and we’re proud to present this annual tradition to the people of Gladstone. The entire organisation loves this concert, and we are greatly looking forward to it,” Mr Freeman said.
