Mystery chest pains lay six passengers low on Lufthansa

September 19, 2013 Aviation, Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59Six passengers complained of severe chest pain on a flight from Frankfurt to Chicago and one was removed from the plane in London after suffering an apparent heart attack.

The bizarre series of apparently unrelated events happened at about the same time as another unexpected Lufthansa event: the sudden resignation of the airline’s highly regarded chief executive, Christoph Franz. EGT_Artical Banner A 250x250

The mystery chest-pain flight was Lufthansa flight 432, carrying 309 passengers from Frankfurt to Chicago.

The flight had to divert to London for a medical emergency. A passenger had suffered a heart attack and was taken to hospital, Lufthansa spokesman Nils Haupt told the Chicago Sun Times.

After the Lufthansa B747 took off from London to continue its flight to Chicago, five other passengers complained of chest pressure or chest pains.

If coincidence, it seems a remarkable one.

“The cases seemed unrelated,” Haupt told the paper. Everything was fine with the aircraft and no complaints were received about the food, he added.

Fortunately, three doctors were aboard. They tended the sick five until the flight landed in Chicago. One of the passengers was treated at the airport and two were taken to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Centre. None were seriously ill.

The plane returned to Frankfurt.

In an apparently unconnected development, meanwhile, Lufthansa chairman and chief executive Christoph Franz said he plans to leave by May 2014 to take up a new position as chairman of Swiss healthcare firm Roche, where he is a board member.

Franz is committed to Lufthansa until 31 May 2014 under his current contract. In a shock for the airline, he has told Lufthansa chairman Wolfgang Mayrhuber that he will not be seeking to renew his contract. Franz has been Lufthansa chairman and chief executive since 1 January 2011.
