Narmbool Gardens in Full Bloom On Open Day

November 9, 2017 Destination Global No Comments Email Email

Narmbool, a beautiful pastoral property of 2,000 hectares located south of Ballarat, will be out in full bloom at this year’s Open Garden Day on Sunday 19th November, for the first time since the devastating Scotsburn bushfires.

Owned by The Sovereign Hill Museums Association, the open day will provide visitors with the opportunity to see the beautiful post-fire garden restorations, and the remarkable period of regeneration by Mother Nature. Lunch and Devonshire tea will be served in the picturesque Garden Room, and children and their families will enjoy a Garden Treasure Trail activity.

A photographic display, outlining Narmbool’s bushfire recovery progression, will be on show, and visitors will also be able to take in the Rolling green hills, craggy volcanic escarpments, and breathtaking views of nearby Mount Buninyong.

Martin Scuffins, who runs the Leigh Valley Hawk and Owl Sanctuary, will have his incredible birds of prey on display, and stalls with Sovereign Hill merchandise (including their famous confectionery, sauces and jams) and other goodies will be available to purchase.

Narmbool is home to 12,000 sheep in a sustainably managed pastoral setting which also has koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and platypuses. The homestead, featuring a bluestone front and adjacent billiard room, has English-style gardens surrounding the side lawns.

A water feature within the garden leads to the Wayaperri Garden, which was planted in 2004.  In the language of the Wadawurrung – the Indigenous people of the area – Wayaperri means to ‘gather’ or ‘meet’.

Another component of the garden is a large pond, complete with a footbridge, water lilies and frogs.

As well as soaking up the surrounds and enjoying the garden, visitors to the Open Garden Day can tour the education and accommodation facilities.

The Narmbool Open Garden Day is the perfect day out for garden enthusiasts, nature lovers, true green thumbs, and the entire family.
