The NSW city of Newcastle now enjoys a place on the global tech innovation map after National Geographic Traveler magazine added the fast-moving coastal destination to its prestigious “SMART CITY’ listings.

After positioning itself as a regional hub of innovation, Newcastle is the first regional Aussie city to be so lauded by the international magazine with a print and online reach of 9.1 million readers and a digital monthly audience of more than 26 million.

“We are on a global hunt to find cities where innovation meets imagination and are quickly becoming the next great travel destinations,” National Geographic Traveler Editor, George W. Stone said.

“Newcastle is a Smart City where locals are smart, surprising, creative and memorable. It’s a city where innovation is visible at every corner and where both locals and visitors benefit from the place-making strategies that bring together public and private interests.”

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes attributes the city’s recognition to a strong sense of community, collaboration and support from the University of Newcastle and the business and government agencies committed to innovative leadership.

“The National Geographic recognition takes us into a new level by not only recognising our tourism appeal but also looking beyond it to the lifestyle, education, technology and entrepreneurial benefits that make our city a great place to invest, work, live and play. Councillor Nelmes said.

“We take great pride in being recognised as an international leader in these highly competitive fields.”

“Newcastle is on the cusp of transitioning from a great regional city to an emerging global city and we are doing our bit as a council to attract investment, jobs and opportunity.

“Newcastle’s re-invention is centred on innovation, hubs of social activity, and hot beds of creativity combined with a delivering on long term vision to be a smart liveable and sustainable city. Projects like our iconic Bathers Way – a six kilometre coastal walk that rivals any coastal walk in the world bookended with our famous ocean pools  – has been a great success.
