National Travel and Tourism Week Celebrates the Visitor Industry Anaheim and Orange County, CA Spotlight

In celebration of the U.S. Travel Association’s National Travel and Tourism Week, May 3-11, 2014, the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau (AOCVCB) will launch a video series entitled “Faces of Tourism” on May 7, 2014.

Five, three-minute videos have been produced, each telling engaging stories about frontline staff and hospitality industry veterans who make tourism work. They reveal the authenticity of the people in the hospitality industry and how tourism makes a difference in their lives.

This nationwide annual salute recognizes the benefits and rewards of tourism and honors those who make the visitor industry thrive. A number of other programs are planned by the AOCVCB next week, from website and collateral updates on tourism’s impact in OC, to Travel and Tourism Week signage and special thank you events for hospitality industry staff.

“National Travel and Tourism Week provides us with an opportunity to showcase how the visitor industry impacts our entire community,” stated Jay Burress, president and CEO, Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau. “The 157,000 people who work in our local hospitality community are each the ‘Face of Tourism’ in many ways, but in truth we all are the ‘Face of Tourism.’ When people visit Anaheim and Orange County and have a great experience it raises our destination to a new level in the minds of travelers, underscores our spirit of hospitality, helps to foster a strong local economy and provides revenue to invest in our community.”

Tourism is vital to the Anaheim and Orange County economy, as nearly 45 million visitors from around the world came to this area in 2013. These visitors spent $9.6 billion on goods and services in a variety of businesses throughout the community, from independent shops to iconic venues.

In Anaheim, the largest city in Orange County and the center of OC’s tourism infrastructure, 18.7 million visitors (from outside of OC) spent $5.8 billion throughout the area in 2013. A strong tourism industry enhances locals’ lifestyles too, as it creates a plethora of dining, shopping, entertainment, sports and nightlife options for all to enjoy.

Tourism in Anaheim gives back to its residents by: supporting all 52 parks in the city, improving roadways and enhancing public safety. The Anaheim Resort district (1,100 acres surrounding the Disneyland Resort and Anaheim Convention Center) accounts for less than five percent of city land, yet represents nearly 50 percent of Anaheim’s tax revenue.

Meetings and conventions also create a positive ripple effect throughout the local economy. The Anaheim Convention Center hosts nearly one million convention and meeting attendees annually. In 2013, attendees spent $940 million throughout Anaheim and Orange County. Trade shows such as National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) and Natural Products Expo West (NPEW) shine a spotlight on the area by giving back to the local community in a variety of ways, from donating to food banks to supporting Anaheim school programs.

National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) was established in 1984 to champion the power of travel through localized events. Nearly 10 million people are employed in tourism-related jobs in the U.S.
