Near miss for jet skiiers and giant cruise ship

Dramatic video has emerged of a couple of young women jet skiiers being rescued from their overturned jet ski – only to be very nearly run down by the enormous, 130,000-ton cruise ship Carnival Magic.

The double lucky escape happened off the coast of Florida.

Port Canaveral harbor pilot Captain Doug Brown was navigating Carnival Magic out of the port when he saw the jet ski with two young women on it in the navigation channel where big ships pass, Florida Today reported.

Aware of the danger they were in, Brown alerted the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department, which sent a deputy sheriff in a patrol boat. As the boat approached the jet skiiers, one of the women fell off into the sea, the jet ski flipped and both ended in the water with the patrol boat desperately trying to rescue them, seconds before the huge Carnival ship bore down on them all.

This short clip, filmed in less than a minute by a passenger on Carnival Magic, shows the drama:

“Get in! Get in!” passengers call, as the two women, aged 19 and 20, are hauled aboard the sheriff’s boat just a metre or two from the bow of the giant cruise ship. Much relief all round as they are rescued.

If the two young women had been pulled under the ship they would probably have been injured or killed, the sheriff’s department said.

If they’d gone under the ship I can confidently say injury was not a worry for them. The enormous Azimuth pods that propel these ships would have left very little behind, kinda like a seagull being ingested by a B747 jet engine. Very silly young women.
