This year marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Europe and Rough Guides are publishing a special book to commemorate this historic event. The book charts the route taken by the allies during the liberation and is being published in partnership with the Liberation Route Europe Foundation, a charity dedicated to keeping the story of the liberation alive.

The book aims to encourage people to travel the ‘liberation route’ and follow in the footsteps of the allied soldiers in 1944-45. The book contains fascinating stories about the human story of the liberation, such as what happened during various Resistance movements and the role women played in the war effort. But it is not just a history book – it highlights the important sites people can visit along the route and recommends experiences that will really bring the liberation story alive, such as the daily sunset march in Nijmegen. This important guide represents a new step in uniting the story of the liberation of Europe across borders.

Agnieszka Mizak, managing director of Rough Guides says:

“Rough Guides is extremely pleased to work with the Liberation Route Europe Foundation and collaborate on such an important project. With this book, we can make sure that people are reminded of this turning point in our history, paying tribute to the people who made it happen.”

The story of the liberation of Europe is as relevant today as it ever was, and perhaps now it is more important than ever to reflect on our hard-fought freedoms and how they came to pass, long after the stories no longer exist in living memory.
