egtmedia59The new deal struck between Brisbane Airport and Virgin Australia will help the airport cater for growing demand for air travel to and from Queensland’s capital city, tourism industry observers say.

The agreement includes:

  • A series of major upgrades to the Virgin Australia-leased area at the Domestic Terminal including an expanded Virgin Australia lounge, new gate lounges to support the growing ATR Turboprop operations, expanded terminal seating areas and additional aerobridge gates for wide-bodied Airbus A330 aircraft;EGT_Artical Banner A 250x250
  • Ongoing runway access for the next 10 years and support for the development of the new parallel runway;
  • The sale and lease-back of the Virgin Australia hangar at Brisbane Airport.

Brisbane Airport’s chief executive and managing director Julieanne Alroe said the signing of the agreement with Virgin Australia marked a significant milestone for the airport.

“The agreement proves the commitment of both BAC and Virgin Australia to the growth of aviation services in Brisbane, Queensland and Australia.

“BAC is committed to building Brisbane’s new runway. The project is on track and on schedule and our investment so far, along with today’s announcement, demonstrates this commitment and is an important step forward”, she said.

Virgin Australia chief financial officer Sankar Narayan said that 37% of the airline’s domestic flights arrived or departed Brisbane each day. The city was an extremely significant airport for Virgin Australia “and is key to our growth aspirations”.

Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) chief executive Ken Morrison said Brisbane Airport and Virgin Australia deserved congratulations on the agreement.

“Australia’s size and location mean that aviation is critical to the future growth of Australia’s tourism industry,” Morrison said, “and today’s announcement is certainly good news for the tourism industry.”

“Additional aviation capacity is needed to support that growth and this agreement will help to facilitate investment in critical infrastructure.

“Brisbane is one of Australia’s four major international tourism gateways and expanding our airports’ capabilities is needed to support increases in aviation activity.

“Brisbane has been the fastest growing airport in Australia since privatisation in 1997, including 71% growth in international passengers over the last decade.

“Domestic traffic through Brisbane Airport grew 4.6% last year, following 6% growth the previous year.

“Its planned third runway will deliver additional capacity vital to allowing Brisbane Airport to meet growing demand for air travel in the years to come.

“The deal announced this morning will also deliver improved facilities for Virgin customers, giving them a better travel experience.”
