The New Cities Summit will be attended by mayors and city governors  from around the world where the Jakarta Summit is only the fourth time that the Conference has been convened. Previous conferences were held in  Paris (France), Sao Paulo (Brazil), and Dallas (the United Stated).  This year the Summit carries the theme: “Seizing the Urban Moment: Cities at the Heart of Growth and Development”.

The New Cities Summit is an important world conference that discusses issues on developing future  megapolitan cities. Besides attended by delegates from cities in the developed world, present will also be 800 prominent delegates including mayors, CEOs, academics, artists and innovators who will discuss city development. In addition, the Summit is expected to gather world’s best city innovators through “What Works short-talk Series” and  the Jakarta Urban Challenge”.

A key issue to be dicussed  will be urban global problems that include transportation, health, education, pollution and garbage, housing and others.

Today, massive urban migrations are ongoing at a very intensive and rapid  pace in many parts of the world. UN data show that world’s  urban population has surged since 1950 from 746 million to 3.9 billion in 2014 .

The city of Jakarta was chosen to host this first conference  held  in Asia since Jakarta is seen to show  a most significant and dynamic  growth.  By hosting the New Cities Summit , Jakarta will have also the opportunity to study and barter the latest  applications of technology,   policies and programs as implemented by cities in  other countries, in efforts to  solve similar problems in this capital city. In addition it is also another opportunity for Jakarta to promote its array of attractions to delegates.

CEO of the New Cities Foundation,  John Rossant explained that the reason why he chose Asia for this year’s Summit was since here many positive developments have been made, where Indonesia has shown a more rapid growth compared to other countries.

“We feel that now is the right moment for Indonesia and Jakarta, – one of Asia’s most dynamic cities,- to host the New Cities Summit. 2015,”  Furthermore, Rossant continued, he has also received information from Jakarta’s Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, that the capital city faces a number of challenges, and to overcome these, Jakarta will need to make a giant leap through the use of the latest technology.

The New Cities Summit will also present a most interesting  panel discussion on  “Animating Our Public Space” organized together with the Global Cultural District Network. Discussions will be on the topic how public spaces could be transformed into public stages for performances, street festivals with proper stage lighting, and large scale public  art exhibitions. Speakers include architect Ole Scheeren; artist and founder of Fearless Collective, Shilo Shiy Suleman; and Marcus Westbury, founder of   Renew Newcastle Asutralia.
