Schoolies is a right of passage for Australian school leavers and while the end of the school year was traditionally celebrated with a domestic trip away, more recently there has been a trend for school leavers heading further a field to celebrate.
New data from leading assistance provider, Allianz Global Assistance (AGA),
has discovered that of those heading overseas, the US is the top new
John White, General Manager, Travel and Medical, Allianz Global Assistance (AGA), said: “This year we’ve seen a substantial growth in the number of school leavers heading to the US to celebrate the end of their school days.
Our policy purchases show that this schoolies season, 18 year olds are travelling further a field. Of the international destinations they’re heading to, the US is the top destination (32 per cent), with Indonesia taking the second spot (25 per cent), Asia in third spot (12.2 per cent) and Fiji to fourth (10.4 per cent).
As the legal drinking age in the US is 21, it shows that more school leavers are opting for alternative celebrations instead of partying tours.“
