After a public tender process, Matevents Pty Ltd received the exclusive Licensing and Retail rights on behalf of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC).

The team behind Matevents were responsible for delivering licensing and retail programs for numerous international sporting events including the Olympic Games, Rugby and Cricket World Cups.

The company will be responsible for manufacturing, sub-licensing, distributing and selling a range of up to 1,000 GC2018 licensed merchandise items.

The deal will also support approximately 300 games-time jobs and offer the opportunity to showcase the designs and creativity of Australian firms.

The product categories range includes apparel, headwear, mascot, publications, homewares, pins, sporting equipment and sports specific product ranges.

GOLDOC CEO Mark Peters said he was delighted to announce the important agreement.

“The Licensing and Merchandise program is an important part of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games brand awareness and community engagement,” Mr Peters said.

“Many Australians still proudly display merchandise and products that they purchased in Brisbane during the 1982 Commonwealth Games.

“By working together with a company with such strong experience in the licensing field as Matevents, we will be able to provide all fans with an accessible and top-quality merchandise range that will remind them of one of Australia’s biggest ever sporting events,” he said.

Matevents will oversee all aspects of merchandising, including product sourcing, granting of sub-licenses, providing and running shops at venues, celebration site kiosks as well a Superstore and other local retail outlets. The company will also be responsible for online sales.

GOLDOC anticipates that all GC2018 licensed merchandise products will be designed in Australia and sourced by Australian companies.

All products will need to meet GOLDOC’s Sustainable Sourcing Code and comply with GOLDOC’s Material and Packaging Guidelines.

On Monday 27 June, local and indigenous companies interested in becoming an official sub-licensee for the GC2018 Games will be invited to a ‘meet the buyers’ session with Matevents representatives.
