Drones Made Easy, an online and in-store drone retailer that offers custom engineering as well as the cloud processing service Maps Made Easy, has released a new feature for their iOS app Map Pilot for DJI. This breakthrough new technology allows users without an internet connection to define flight paths that follow the terrain being flown over as an in-app purchase for only $19.99 — an innovation that was financially prohibitive and virtually inaccessible to the majority of drone users until now.

“By combining NASA’s recently released high-resolution global elevation data with our industry leading Map Pilot for DJI application, we have made a huge jump forward in what can and can’t be mapped using drones,” says Tudor Thomas, CTO of Drones Made Easy. “Our focus is on enabling new capabilities for drones and taking the guesswork out of automated data collection.”

This is just one of Drones Made Easy’s revolutionary strides in the industry. “Following the terrain when mapping minimizes ground resolution inconsistencies and maintains consistent overlap. These are important for achieving high-quality results. Our new Terrain Aware capability will be finding its way into a lot of great new features and applications in the future,” promises Thomas.

To further their technological capabilities, Drones Made Easy has also partnered with a variety of specialty camera manufacturers to add support for different models, which will benefit both users as well as the camera companies themselves.

Before founding Drones Made Easy, Tudor Thomas and CEO Brian Yates both worked on aerial imaging and 3D reconstruction technologies for 12 years. Starting at QinetiQ North America’s Advanced Imaging Division, they eventually advanced to an Internet-connected robotic camera startup before the rapidly expanding drone industry beckoned. With their expert knowledge of electromechanical system design, unmanned aerial vehicle operations, imaging technologies, and cutting edge aerial image processing techniques, their goal for Drones Made Easy is to enable military and commercial mapping technologies to the general public with affordable and approachable applications. By providing a plethora of services to drone users, including retail, flight training, custom interface builds, mobile app development, and more, Drones Made Easy is quickly becoming a full-service leader in the drone industry.
