New Segways Tours of South Coast Vineyard

The site of the first European settlement of the NSW South Coast – the convict-built vineyard village of Coolangatta Estate near Berry – can now be explored on a Segway personal transporter, with new day and overnight accommodation packages available.

Coolangatta tours - vineyardSegway Tours South Coast, which launched late last year with tours of Killalea State Park south of Wollongong, has started offering new 60 and 90-minute tours of the historic Coolangatta Estate vineyard two hours south of Sydney and 2½ hours from Canberra near Berry.

Colonial entrepreneur, Alexander Berry (the town was named after him), and 100 convicts established a farm village beside the Shoalhaven River in 1822, naming it Coolangatta after the Aboriginal name for the nearby mountain, which means ‘fine view’. In fact the Gold Coast town of Coolangatta was named after one of Berry’s merchant sailing ships, ‘The Coolangatta’, which was wrecked off Point Danger on the NSW/QLD border in 1846.

Today, Coolangatta Estate is an inviting vineyard near the river and ocean with restored cottages built by the early convicts, a cellar door, accommodation, a nine-hole golf course, croquet lawn, pool and Alexander’s Vineyard Bistro, which offers fresh local produce.

Segway Tours South Coast, run by Berry couple, David and Jennifer Munn, is offering 60-minute Vineyard Tours and longer 90-minute Estate Tours of Coolangatta’s rolling, green hills, vineyard and rambling village, with guests taught how to ride the quiet, high-tech, $10,000 electric vehicles before setting out to explore the estate.

The self-balancing, two-wheeled Segways are easy to use, extremely manoeuvrable, ‘intuitive’ to operate and fun to ride. Just lean in the direction you want to travel and the low-impact Segway will move without any hand or foot operation. The Segways, which can reach speeds of 20 km/h, are suitable for riders aged 12 and over. The Segways are also ideal for team-building group experiences, with obstacle courses, time trials and ball sports available.
