Seoul is working actively to nurture the next generation of business events professionals through a new series of free educational programs designed to provide young jobseekers with practical experience in events management, making them more attractive to prospective employers.

In July, the Seoul Convention Bureau received applications for the 60-hour “Seoul MICE Professionals Training Course”, in which 50 successful candidates will acquire vocational skills related to business events, with the top graduates offered an additional two months of on-site field experience.

“The training programs are designed to provide an opportunity to turn those interested in working in the MICE industry into competitive meetings professionals,” said Seoul Metropolitan Government Director of Tourism Business Division Bae Yanghui. “Successful applicants will have the chance to work hands-on at actual events while learning from today’s experts,” he added.

The first program will take place from August 6-22, after which the 15 highest-performing trainees will be selected for the “Seoul MICE Job Training” and “Seoul MICE Employment” support courses, during which they will apply their skills at live events and obtain valuable work experience. Participation in the programs will also give trainees an opportunity to network with existing professionals as well as meet prospective future employers while demonstrating their abilities.

It is expected to be the first of many such opportunities, with plans to expand the course in coming years in order to train up to 700 new meeting professionals by 2018.

The Seoul Convention Bureau, which will be running the courses, also operates the Seoul Convention Supportersprogram, in which students from convention-related university departments are selected for a series of training courses including both theoretical and on-site experiential components. Fully-trained Supporters are then available for Seoul-based international events or corporate meetings for operational support.
