New Study Reveals Australia’s Happiest Places

March 24, 2017 Lifestyle No Comments Email Email

March 20 marked the fifth instalment of the UN’s International Happiness Day. As part of the celebrations, the intergovernmental organisation released its World Happiness Report, a large-scale quantitative study that measures global happiness levels. And out of 155 countries, Australia ranked in 9th spot!

Intrigued to dig deeper, EliteSingles research team collated anonymous data from 14,700 members registered with its site to establish where Australia’s happiest singles live. By aggregating how strongly its users self-scored themselves on a happiness scale, the premium online dating site put together a top 10 list of Australia’s happiest places. Here are the results:

  1.        Geelong (VIC)
  2.        Sunshine Coast (QLD)
  3.        Ballarat (VIC)
  4.        Toowoomba (QLD)
  5.        Gold Coast (QLD)
  6.        Mandurah (WA)
  7.        Darwin (NT)
  8.        Cairns (QLD)
  9.        Port Macquarie (NSW)
  10.        Brisbane (QLD)

Cheery Geelong comes out beaming!

So there you have it – Geelong, Victoria’s second largest city, takes first place on the podium of Australia’s happiest places! Ballarat also made it into the top three, proving that you don’t always need to be beside the seaside to have high spirits.

Although the results show that happy Aussie singles can be found countrywide, Queensland appears to be Australia’s jolliest state; 5 out of 10 places fall within the state’s borders. Sunshine Coast narrowly missed out on pole position, although Mooloolaba had one of the country’s highest scores before EliteSingles averaged out the region’s data.Brisbane also made the cut, proving that bustling cities can be happy places to call home too!

If your hometown made it into the top 10, we’re confident it’s another excuse to keep smiling. If it didn’t, don’t be disheartened. As Monday’s report revealed, we should celebrate that, as a country, we’re amongst the happiest folk in the world. What’s not to be cheerful about that!
