New Tablet Apps Offer A Magazine-Quality Way To Browse And Book Airbnb; Available On Ios And Android Devices
Airbnb, the world’s leading community-driven hospitality company, will today unveil new apps for both Android and iOS tablet devices. The apps give travelers an immersive look at Airbnb’s more than one million listings, making the experience of researching their next adventure as beautiful as reading a glossy magazine. The apps will become available in the Apple App Store and Google Play at 9:00pm PST. From viewing treehouses in Costa Rica to villas in Tuscany, travelers can explore incredible destinations around the world in stunning high resolution images and then book their next trip directly on the device.
“Whether you’re on your couch at home, at a coffee-shop, or on the bus, we wanted to ensure that Airbnb can always be with you,” said Alex Schleifer, head of design at Airbnb. “Our tablet apps were inspired by the elegance of magazines and coffee table books and we tried to instill some of that lean-back feeling as we thought about how to make the experience unique. Designing for a new platform allowed us to think much more broadly than simply scaling a mobile phone app to a larger screen, and, as a result, you can now efficiently explore listings around the world while enjoying a rich, inspiring experience.”
More than a tablet app, the native Airbnb experience responds like a picture book, where a trip starts the moment a person flips it open. The apps take advantage of the capabilities that have made magazines and content experiences so successful on tablets. It showcases Airbnb’s signature gorgeous photography in high resolution, displaying unique homes and picturesque views in a format designed exclusively for the high pixel density of today’s tablet screens. Every element has been designed from the ground up for the larger tablet screen, with focus on the photography and typography for a cinematic feel.
Designing for an entirely new platform allowed Airbnb to rethink how people flow between the different stages of the booking experience. For example, the tablet features dual-paned browsing for messages, taking advantage of more real estate for easy navigation. When viewing search results, map interactions are elegantly designed to minimize taps required to explore listings and people can easily flip between listings and a map view.
The new tablet apps offer:
- Immersive maps that share more about the listings to help people decide whether to dive deeper into the content
- Listing pages that showcase the cinematic images in high resolution
- Seamless flow through the app that reacts to touch rather than a point and click, which keeps people engaged as they move through the booking experience
- An in-depth Discover page offering curated listings, wishlists, and experiences around the world
- A message system specifically built for a tablet with dual-pane view for the first time on Airbnb
- New navigation setup that offers a simple way to find upcoming trips
