New Technology and a savvy approach to business key to “Growing the Business of Agriculture”

Australia’s primary producers will need to master new technologies and become more business “savvy” if they are to grow the nation’s share of the world market for top quality agricultural products, according to researchers at the University of Sydney.

Professor Eddie Anderson, a professor of Business Analytics, says that producers must learn to use the massive amounts of data now available to them in order to understand everything from soil quality to satellite imaging.

However, he goes on to say that “it’s not enough for producers to have access to data or own expensive machinery if they don’t understand best practice business principles, finance, supply chain management and international markets”.

The most pressing challenges now facing the sector will be addressed on Thursday (28th Sept.) during a high powered symposium titled ‘Growing the Business of Agriculture’.

The symposium will be hosted by the University of Sydney Business School and the newly established Sydney Institute of Agriculture.

Organisers say that “in a challenging environment, growth matters more than ever. It makes it easier to fund new investments, attract great talent, and acquire assets”. But, they also add that “it’s not easy to shift from cost-control to expansion mode”.

Specifically, the Symposium will explore the following themes:

  • Understanding market-led growth strategies — growing customers, branding new products, teaming with supply chain partners, sourcing capital for growth
  • Global and local trends driving the demand for agricultural products and services
  • Knowing the methods for growth — product innovation, mergers and acquisitions, key assets (including patents and brands), and supply chain relationships
  • Exploring partnership models for sustaining top-line growth
  • Identifying the regulatory changes needed for sustainable growth
  • Learning how to get the balance right between risk and growth.
