Potala Palace, one of Tibet’s top must see cultural sites, has been captivating travelers’ imaginations.

foreign students travel in Tibet, Tibet vacation tour for studentsTowering 300 meters above Lhasa its gargantuan size often surprises travelers: 1,000 rooms; 10,000 shrines; and about 200,000 statues call this cultural treasure chest home. In partnership with Tibet Ctrip Travel Service-TCTS (, one travel agency in Tibet, travel writer Devin K. Moore gives a preview of what’s in store.

Potala Palace is typically at the top of a Tibet tour itinerary. Travelers battle the altitude as they make their way up several flights of stairs to the entrance. The panoramic views of Lhasa and surrounding mountains are worth the climb but don’t hesitate to take breaks on the way up. As travelers enter, a fantastically painted entrance foreshadows the beauty inside.

First up are the former living quarters of the 14th Dalai Lama, including his thrown room and areas for receiving foreign dignitaries. Potala was home to Dalai Lamas dating all the way back to the 5th. Its interior has been ornately decorated over the centuries: paintings and statues of unimaginable detail abound.

TCTS’s native Tibetan guides work to help travelers understand the significance of Potala Palace. Given its extensive history and collection of cultural artifacts, what travelers learn here often helps build a foundation for understanding other important sites visited on a tour of Tibet.

The atmosphere in Potala is nothing short of a dream; the glow of yak butter candles illuminates shrines as incense wafts through the air. Visitors will take a journey through Tibetan history as they walk its halls. Whether visiting Lhasa for a quick tour or exploring Tibet in depth, Potala Palace cannot be missed. Now that the Tibet travel season is in full swing, travelers are advised to start planning their visit as soon as possible.
