Visitors to Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown can now tap into specialist local tips and keep up-to-date with what to see and do on the apps, now available to download from the Apple App Store.

My Destination New Zealand first launched in 2012, bringing together local expertise and the award-winning My Destination global platform, to enable travellers to get the most out of their trips to New Zealand’s tourism hotspots. Delivered by experts on the ground – and in the know – the online travel guides provide users with easy access to useful information, travel articles, local tips, events and videos.

Key information from the website will now be available through the user-friendly mobile app along with a range of app specific features.

An ‘interactive map’ makes it easier for users to locate and access directions to nearby attractions using GPS tracking which has a compass to guide visitors to a place, once selected, in both on or offline mode.

The ‘trip planner’ feature will mark favourites and create personalised itineraries to plan ideal trips. It also enables users to sync their shortlist with My Destination websites to access more local recommendations from experts.

At a click of a button a ‘near me’ option will automatically bring up information highlighting what to see and do based on the user’s location.

My Destination New Zealand managing director Mike Watt said the launch of the mobile app meant not only more options for tourists to access up-to-date travel information, but was  also a unique opportunity for businesses to promote their services.

“We’re seeing a huge shift in the way people search for content. Twenty-five per cent of our audience are accessing My Destination websites on tablets or smart phones, and that number’s rapidly increasing,” he said.

“Our websites are already optimised for mobile devices however the mobile apps provide a much handier way of personalising travel plans and experiencing the best of a destination by showing nearby attractions based on a user’s exact location.”

Local businesses featuring on the My Destination New Zealand website will benefit from free promotion on the new mobile apps.

“It’s not only travellers to New Zealand who benefit from the new app, but at no extra cost our customers can reach the growing domestic and international visitor market that’s shifting away from the traditional way of accessing content online,” said Mr Watt.

Queenstown’s My Thai Restaurant manager Melanie Chui is looking forward to the extra exposure her business will get on the new app.

“It’s great news for businesses like mine to hear that My Destination New Zealand is launching new mobile apps,” said Ms Chui.

“My business features on the My Destination Queenstown site – so to gain additional exposure and promotion on its app platform is a welcome bonus.”

Mr Watt said there was plenty of opportunity for new businesses to come on board with the new apps.
