Riviera Travel River Cruises has launched a new ‘Walk and Discover’ program of guided walks for active passengers keen to explore a different side of destinations visited by the line’s luxury river ships in Europe.

Guided by local experts, up to 20 guests can follow paths and trails through forests, meadows and vineyards, along rivers, and up to scenic lookouts, castles and ruins.

For Australians keen to make a late booking on a European river cruise this year, the new, small-group walks will be available on three sailings this September and October.

For A$55 per person, passengers can join three guided walks with a local walking expert on

* An eight-day Medieval Germany sailing from Mainz to Nuremberg, departing September 26, 2019 – walks in Wertheim, Würzburg and Bamberg

* An eight-day Blue Danube sailing, round-trip from Budapest, departing October 14, 2019 – walks in Esztergom, Durnstein and Mondsee.

And for A$75 per person, guests can join five walks on:

* A 15-day Heart of Europe cruise from Cologne to Budapest, sailing October 31, 2019- walks in Hainburg an der Donau, Passau, Bamberg, Wurzburg and Rudesheim.

Cruise fares start at A$2769 per person, twin-share, for the eight-day Blue Danube sailing.

The ‘Walk and Discover’ experiences are in addition to the complimentary excursions passengers can join in every port on Riviera Travel River Cruises’ sailings across Europe. Space is limited on the small-group walks so advance bookings are recommended.

“These new, specialised walks are the perfect addition for guests who want to be more active or experience a more natural setting during their European river cruise,” said Australian sales manager for Riviera Travel River Cruises, Thomas Morgan. “Local experts will lead the way and share their knowledge, guiding guests through forests, up hills and along rivers to beautiful viewpoints and historical sites.”

Riviera offers 15 itineraries on 10 rivers and waterways across Europe, including exclusive departures for solo travellers, aboard the youngest fleet of ships in Europe, with none older than six years. Riviera’s cruises include spacious cabins and suites, fine culinary experiences and expert-led excursions. Riviera’s five-star cruises are available at fares up to 50 per cent lower than river companies more established in Australia.
