O’Hares Creek Lookout, Dharawal National Park near Campbelltown in Macarthur

A new lookout and walkway has opened in Dharawal National Park in the Macarthur region offering spectacular views over an overlooked wilderness just an hour from the Sydney CBD.

Officially unveiled on October 1, 2013, by NSW Environment Minister, Robyn Parker, the O’Hares Creek Lookout and Walking Track,  15 minutes south-east of Campbelltown town centre in the Macarthur region, boasts vistas over rugged, sandstone gorge country filled with swimming holes, waterfalls, pristine bushland, wildlife and rock shelters that preserve Aboriginal markings dating back 15,000 years.

The wheelchair-accessible lookout platform is accessed by the reformed O’Hares Creek Lookout Walking Track, a flat and easy 1.4km trail from the Victoria Rd carpark on the edge of Dharawal National Park – one of NSW’s newest parks, which was declared in 2012 and named after the Dharawal Aboriginal people who lived there.

The 6500-hectare national park – unknown to many people who live a short drive away in the suburbs of Sydney – is home to koalas, wallabies, wallaroos, potoroos, countless birds as well as 500 plant species, including vast woodlands of scribbly gums. The park also offers longer walks that descend into the creek gorges where many idyllic, bush-fringed and waterfall-fed swimming holes can be found for a dip in summer. Boundless fresh air and an inspiring feeling of wilderness can also be enjoyed just a short drive from the Sydney metropolitan area.
