The New York Times ranked Canada as number 1 on its list of “52 Places to Go” this year, an annual list of top travel destinations compiled by The New York Times’ distinguished travel editors.

Placing ahead of Chile, India, Switzerland and Botswana, who rounded out the top five destinations, The New York Times website recognised Canada as a country that has it all:

“It’s a world unto itself, with Vancouver Island surf breaks, culinary delights in Toronto and Montreal, and natural glories of parks like Banff in Calgary.”

With Canada celebrating its 150th anniversary of Confederation throughout 2017, the New York Times acknowledges that this is the year to visit:

“Canada is rolling out the welcome mat. All of the country’s more than 200 national parks and historic sites are offering free admission through the year, from the turquoise lakes and mountain peaks of Banff in Alberta to the rolling dunes and red sandstone cliffs of Prince Edward Island along the Atlantic Coast to the newest reserve, the glacial-rounded Mealy Mountains in Labrador.

“Meanwhile, in the capital, Ottawa, a full year of celebration is planned and more events will be on offer in Montreal, which turns 375.”

Donna Campbell, Managing Director, Destination Canada GSA, says: “With the favourable exchange rate close to parity with the Australian dollar, it’s little wonder Canada saw record numbers of Aussie travellers arriving on its shores in 2016.

“Australians are keen to explore the lesser-known parts of Canada, its cosmopolitan cities, historic Maritime provinces, and epic wilderness. We expect an even greater increase in visitors to the country in 2017.”
