While Australia is near the top of the heap for global beer consumption with an average of 4.5 litres per person each year[1], our tastes are changing.

The big thing in beer right now is no longer light or low-carb concoctions, it’s craft – punching premium flavour from the little guys, and Newcastle is the hub for a swathe of independent brewers reinvigorating traditional recipes and experimenting with fresh flavours.

Over the past five years, revenue for Australia’s boutique beer sector[2] has risen by 10.5 per cent to reach $148.8 million, including an estimated 6.4 spike in the past year alone. Craft beer producers are tipped to generate 3.2 per cent of the beer industry’s total revenue this financial year,[3], with Australian beer exports overall expected to increase from $51.2 million in 2013-4 to $78 million in 2016-7 – a forecast $27 million increase in 3 years.

Highlights during Craft Beer Week include:

  • Thursday February 20: launch event at the Grain Store bringing together the best and brightest faces in beer
  • Wednesday February 26: the official Newcastle Craft Beer Week dinner at the iconic Merewether Surfhouse featuring a tailored menu coupled with a selection of our finest craft beers
  • Saturday March 1: a mini festival will take over the Honeysuckle precinct
  • Sunday March 2: the annual Warners at the Bay Festival will test the mettle of the most experienced beer drinkers with a fine selection of more than 120 examples of craft beer to choose from
