unnamed (8)Located on the bustling SoHo corner of Staunton and Aberdeen, Stazione Novella pays homage to the simple Italian bars around the Florence train station. Open from breakfast until bed, Black Sheep Restaurants’ latest locale is a venue for any time of day. From breakfast coffee and pastries to Italian wines, panini and snacks served until late, Stazione Novella’s offering is appropriate for any agenda.*

The renowned hospitality group’s newest concept is the result of the bittersweet travel experience of the group’s Co-Founder and Managing Partner Christopher Mark. “I was pick-pocketed in Napoli shortly before I boarded a train to Florence. I found myself stranded in the capital of Tuscany at Stazione Santa Maria Novella, waiting helplessly for a cash transfer to arrive. An Italian gentleman took pity on me and bought me a panino while I killed time. Even at the train station the standard of the food was amazing-— I was inspired by both the kind hospitality of the locals and the unpretentious Florentine cuisine.”

A neighbourhood Italian bar, Stazione Novella takes its influences from the famed fiaschetterias of Florence— charming boltholes that welcome guests from morning to evening. The bustling venue reflects the vibrant, transient energy of its junction location, with guests coming and going throughout the day.

Open from breakfast until late, Stazione Novella will serve fresh coffee made with a state of the art La Marzocco machine, thirst-quenching fresh orange juice and Tuscan pastries for breakfast, followed by an all-day menu of craveable panini, bruschette, salumi and cheeses made with premium ingredients imported from Italy.

An all-Italian wine list features approachable options that can be paired with light bites or enjoyed on their own. The carefully curated wine programme focuses on Tuscan wines by niche producers, but also proudly showcases choice bottles from underappreciated wine regions such as Sicily and Lombardy. Several of the wines available, including the artisanal Lamuri Nero d’Avola (HK$88/glass, HK$750/bottle), have been imported exclusively for Stazione Novella. The impressive wine offering is complemented by a range of draught and bottled beers including Italy’s iconic Peroni.

A regular refresher at all of Florence’s most popular bars, the effervescent Sgroppino al Limone (HK$98) is an icy blend of either limoncello or lemon sorbet and prosecco— perfect for combatting the Hong Kong heat. Also on the cocktail menu are distinctly Italian summer favourites like the Negroni and Aperol Spritz (both HK$78).

The thoughtful design recreates a vibe akin to that of an Italian vico, or side street, with floor to ceiling windows opening up onto the pavement. Mature finishes reflect timeless practicality, making it seem as if Stazione Novella has always been there. Detailed elements such as distressed mirrors and a ceiling adorned with traditional Chianti fiascos, a former mainstay of Italian eateries in the 19th century, create the illusion of history and reinforces the venue’s intention to serve the neighbourhood for years to come.

References to the thriving activity of a train station reflect the source of the concept’s inspiration and enhance Stazione Novella’s transient offering. Inside, a custom made flip clock displays updated departure times and destinations, whilst an authentic Seiko hanging clock marks the bar’s position on Staunton Street. Deliberately set five minutes ahead of time, the clock pokes fun at the unpunctual nature of the city and provides a functional local landmark under which to meet.

The newest venture by Black Sheep Restaurants offers a thoughtful range of seating to suit guests’ preferences— street-side stools look out to fashionable PMQ, whilst a selection of small tables and bar perches within the venue offer more privacy. An inviting space for the community to gather, Stazione Novella is set to be a local favourite.
