Nikoi Island is the runner-up for ‘Sustainability’

Nikoi Island, a private resort located less than 50 miles from Singapore, has been awarded a prestigious 2013 Travel + Leisure Global Vision Award for Sustainability (runner-up).

Introduced in 2005, the Awards recognize the outstanding efforts of individuals and organizations that are working to preserve the world’s natural and man-made treasures.

Every year the Travel & Leisure magazine editors scour the globe to determine the standard-bearers for responsible tourism. Nancy Novogrod, Editor-in-Chief says: “Nikoi serves as a trailblazer and a powerful force in promoting sustainability and mindfulness of the earth’s precious resources.”

Nikoi is a pristine island, enveloped by white sandy beaches and coral reefs, crowned by lush rainforest.  From the outset its owners embraced a commitment to a long term sustainable mission, employing local builders, using only locally sourced materials, foodstuffs, and investing heavily in education and training for the local community. Even now only two employees are non-locals. But critically, it doesn’t market itself as an ‘eco-resort’ – a fashionable term often with no real substance. In fact there is no marketing budget, preferring instead to invest in the foundation they have established for the local community.

As owner Andrew Dixon explains: “For us sustainable tourism means we have considered all of our stakeholders through all phases of the development and operation. Nikoi’s tag line is “Relaxed by Nature”. We like to think that guests leave Nikoi not only relaxed but inspired by the example of how they can live more responsibly.”
