Viewing the spectacular northern lights in Canada’s Northwest Territories has topped the list of 100 Things to do in Canada Before You Die, published in the summer edition of Australia’s best-selling outbound travel magazine, International Traveller.

Aurora borealis in Yellowknife

Citing Yellowknife as the best place in Canada to experience the spectacular aurora borealis, the Northwest Territories took the number one spot ahead of more than 700 nominations of bucket-list experiences throughout Canada.

The list was compiled by an expert judging panel, including prominent travel writers, authors, and Quentin Long, cofounder of Australian Traveller Media and commentator for Channel 9 Mornings, ABC 702 and 2GB Radio.

“Canada travel experts, operators and tourism officers were asked to nominate the experiences they believe should be on everyone’s bucket list,” says Quentin.  “The nominations were put to a judging panel whose job it was to whittle down this world of wonder to a comprehensive list of the top 100.”

The Northwest Territories features three times in the top 30, highlighting Blachford Lake Lodge and the reindeer migration in Inuvik, while rafting down the Nahanni River and catching a floatplane to Virginia Falls also made the top 100 list as  ‘to die for’ experiences.

With the top 30 experiences appearing in a reverse-flip section of the current edition of International Traveller, the northern lights in the Northwest Territories is described as an enthralling nocturnal spectacle:

Located right along the magnetic poles’ active auroral band, it’s a hub of super-charged solar winds, with eerie astral displays so reliable that visitors flock to stand in awe beneath the arcs of pulsing, glowing colours.

“The aurora borealis is a truly mesmerising spectacle,” says travel writer and 100 Things to do in Canada Before You Die panellist, Rob McFarland.

With Australian travellers to the world’s second largest nation jumping 6.6 per cent in July this year, this comprehensive list of bucket-list experiences will act as a reference guide for Aussies planning their next big adventure in Canada.

“Canada is such an iconic bucket list destination for Australians, it just made sense to us to produce the 100 Things to do in Canada Before You Die,” says Quentin.
